Boafeng radios are everywhere nowadays, now of course they are not the best radios out there but they work and they are cheaper then other options. This new style works well. Best part is all the controls are same as every other boafeng radio. The size is smaller, however it still comes with all the features. The sound quirky is acceptable as is the frequency range. My only issue with boafeng radios is the way the battery clips in, the little clips break and then the radio is useless. Just be careful of those clips and you will be fine.

Got these because the price was great for what all you get and since someone had given us a baofeng radio previously I figured it would be handy to have 3 for the family in case of emergencies, just need to get the 3rd one on the same channels as the other 2 came with the same matching channels programmed ready to go. They do have a flashlight, another good emergency feature, and pick up FM stations really well! Haven't played with them a lot yet but so far I'm impressed and happy! Not intending to become a ham operator, just wanted some good radios to communicate in case that really bad day comes that you hope never comes! ;)

Just received the BAOFENG UV-5R radios and they work great—solid build and excellent range. I love using them while hiking with the kids; they’re easy to operate, and the USB-C charging is super convenient for on-the-go use. They come with everything you need, and I’m excited to dive into the programming features I’ve heard so much about!

I'm giving this 4 stars because for the price you get a lot but one noted feature just does not work. The M-5R is a UV-5RM type radio with expanded capabilities. First, it is a tri band rather than dual band radio. This means you will have access to the 2 meter, 1.25 meter, and 70 centimeter bands via FM mode. This radio is also capable of transmitting and receiving the GMRS and FRS bands out of the box with no modification required. The items included are of random value. The higher value items are the USB-C charging capable batteries, USB C charging cables, and charging cradles if you would rather use those. The other items are largely lacking. For instance, the pack in antennas (also known as rubber ducks) are ok but not great for VHF (2 meter) and UHF (70 centimeter) bands, but are nearly useless for the 1.25 meter band. You will need to buy an aftermarket antenna in order to access the 1.25 meter band with any consistency. These aftermarket antennas run anywhere from 10 to 30 dollars and are well worth it to access all 3 bands. The radio did an excellent job of receiving both weather band and FM broadcast stations with the stock antenna, as well as all 3 amateur radio bands once fitted with an aftermarket tri band antenna. The stock antenna was only able to transmit and receive VHF (2 meter) and UHF (70 cm) signals effectively. What it does not do well at all, is receive aircraft band. I'm not too far from an airport and can usually tune in the ATIS transmission on most radios. I have yet to test one of the BaoFeng UV-5R series radios that can actually tune those transmissions at all. Frankly, I don't think they should be saying that it can tune the air bands, it simply cannot. This is why I docked one star from my review. Finally, I did connect one of the units to a Tiny SA Ultra to test for spurious emissions. I'm happy to report that while one spur was present, it was well below 40dB from the fundamental frequency and was less than 25 microwatts, meaning these radios pass the FCC's standards for amateur use in the United States.
