Solid set of Family Radio Service (FRS) radios. Pluses include that they come with a set of batteries that are usb rechargeable in the radio. And the fact that they're all different colors helps you know who's left their radios sitting around or didn't turn theirs off when they handed it in :-) Sound quaity is good, controls are simple --and once set up fairly goof-proof for non-radio folks. In the US, FRS Radios like these are limited by law to 2 watts of power on certain channels and 0.5 watts of power on others. That makes them pretty usable for a few thousand feet -- as much as a mile or so under good conditions. Haven't pushed these to their limit, but that is the norm for FRS radios. They do seem to have good coverage despite the legal limitations. These radios are not going to keep you connected over several miles in the wilderness, however. No FRS radio will. But check in with the kids riding their bikes in the rv park or campground? Sure! Find the kids when they get off the ride while you sit at the exit? Yep. Boat to boat or even car to car within reasonable visual range should be no problem. What's the point of them then? Well they work where there's no cell phone coverage. If you drop them in the water it's a lot cheaper to replace than a cell phone. You can hand them to kids . And you can have six people on the same party line to coordinate calling the kids to dinner and the cousins back from exploring the nriverbank.By the way it is useful to know that on FRS radios generally channels 1-7 and 15-22 are the "high power" channels and 8-14 are the low power ones. You will get significantly less coverage on the low power channels than you will on the high power ones. ( PRO TIP: Some FRS radios, especially made overseas, do not assign the correct U S channel numbers to the FRS frequency. Thus on my brand-that-shall-not-be-named overseas manufactured radio, channel "1" is actually FRS channel 16 ; it's worth scrolling through the channels to make sure they're aligned if you are going to use radios from another set. Here the channels are properly labeled, and these should work just fine with any other F R S radio). One final note, these FRS radios do not require a license in the US. That's good.IF you want considerably more distance you will need to step up to a GMRS radio, which requires at least one license per family and no test -- just a fee. With GMRS it's possible to have a vehicle mounted or portable battery mounted radio that is up to 50 watts. Thaqt is a lot more than the 2 watt max of an FRS radio. These walkie talkies are family radio service and are not intended to be long range professional communications. And for what they are supposed to be, they are very nice and do a good job.
