Fixed my 15 year old Honeywell gas valve on my 15 year old Bradford white water heater. Just took a hot bath too.

My old sensor and plastic holder was 2-5/8" long but this model is 3-3/4" long and didn't fit. I then realized the sensor itself could be unsnaped and placed into my oldplastic holder for a perfect fit. Works great!

Thanks to all you guys who mentioned that this was the solution to the 5 flash indicator. We have a store brand water heater from Lowes with a Honeywell gas valve. Once you removed the plastic cover (which you can pop out with your hand), you will see a thin three-colored wire attached to the back of motherboard of that plastic cover. Using only your fingers, unplug this wire (needle nose pliers can be used also but I didn't need them). There is a star screw on the bottom front of the aluminum control box of the valve. Unscrew it. Then look at the bottom portion of the black plastic housing of the control valve that screws into the water heater. There you will see two tab-like pieces that are holding the aluminum control box in place, one on the right and another on the left. Using a flathead screwdriver and your hand, gently pry the cover from beneath those tabs. The aluminum control box will then pull right out. This temperature sensor fits right inside of the black plastic housing that screws into the water heater. You will see it once you remove the aluminum control box. This is also the same sensor that you disconnected from the motherboard. Carefully remove the bad sensor, insert the new one (it snaps into place) and reconnect the three-colored wire to the motherboard. Reassemble everything and fire it up! There is no need to drain the tank and unscrew the gas control valve.

No photo. Sensor works as expected I’m grateful I didn’t have to replace the water heater.

I had the infamous 5 blink code on my water heater, which keeps the unit from working. I watched a couple Utube videos, which basically isolated the problem to this sensor and showed how to install it. Purchased this one on Amazon and installed it (which was not difficult) and it solved the problem! So far so good. A lot less expensive than a new water heater!

Fixed the issue (5 flash issue, burner turns off, but pilot stays on). It's not hard to change, take off the gas valve and it's right there.
