I got this due to overall NAS reviews. I went back and forth between this model and a Synology model. I I live the look and feel and the easy of adding removing drives. I started out with 4 drives in Raid 0, not ideal yeah, but it was a test and I wanted all the drives together to move some data off failing drives. After a couple weeks, I had a few more drives to add and I set those up in 2 pairs of 2 drives in Raid 0, to get the data off the 4 drives to 2 drives combined for 28TB. I am currently working on a method to convert half of the drives to Raid with redundancy. My disappointment is with the file transfer rates. The files can be really really really really slow and lock up Windows File Explorer during transfer at times. Other times it will basically loose the wired connection which is a cat6e cable to my gigabit router which is connected, wired to the gigabit port on my motherboard. Will I normally be transferring 5-10TB or data? No, but it should not make it hard to nearly anything else on the drive. That is part of what a NAS should help with. I am working on creating a standalone media center computer to connect the NAS for my new apartment living room entertainment center, but am not confident it will feed the 4k and 1080p movies as I would expect them to.I am overall, for the price disappointment and it does not appear there is anything I can do about it. Maybe a different processor in a different model would have been better?

Was on the fence to get this for a long time and glad I bit the bullet, when I first got it I had buyers remorse due to the cost. However since then it has really grown on and just playing around with it shows what a high quality product this is. The desktop is incredible, the features are much more than I care about but it is aimed at businesses and small corporations but makes an excellent home NAS. I love the various encryption technologies. The thing I don't like is when you lock a disk it has to restart all the services to keep integrity, I guess logically needs to be done but a pain. I love the fact you can lock a disk and it remains hidden in the background. I moved a lot of data from an old PC NAS which I haven't used for years and don't want to see it, so threw in on a hidden encrypted disk and remains hidden which is perfect, also if someone steals the NAS the disk automatically locks itself which is great. I also use encrypted .dmg files (osx) or you can use veracrypt if you wanted to choose not to use the priority encryption. Windows systems can use veracrypt to create encrypted containers. The desk top is second to none and incredible, truly shows what a quality product this is, plus you can download apps on your phone showing you the status of the array, CPU, Memory, fan usage. You can trunk network ports which is great.Another feature which I love is the SSH connectivity, most people won't use this, but what I did was mount a NFS drive off my old linux pc, and copy directly from that NAS to this one via the ssh shell. The SSH shell is amazing and saves you from copying data over the network. For instance, instead of coping a file over the network and you wanted reorganize your files from one folder to another or from one drive to another, you can do a local rsync or copy, brilliant feature.I would definitely consider buying a second array and putting it my garage as a backup. Highly recommended, if you want a state of the art, high quality array, I can recommend this one.

This is my 2nd QNAP NAS. My first one lasted 10 years and the quality they produce is top notch. I upgraded it to 64GB RAM with two 512GB m2 SSD for cache. Really love what they have done with QTS in the latest versions. This NAS has everything I was missing in my last one (pci e slots / more ram / vm and container support) and the tool-less drive sleds are a really nice touch. At first I thought they cheaped out on them compared to my last Qnap (they are all metal) but it’s not the case. They are very solid and actually prefer the plastic now. My only complaints are: for $900 it should have come with more then 4GB as cheap as RAM is these days. It should have come with screen for status like my last one had. Instead of 4 1GbE ports why not include at least 2.5gbE or 5gbE. This is not exactly a cheap or entry level product. I get 10gbE would be expensive but even most motherboards come with 2.5gbE. The included heatsinks for the m2 drives are a joke. Other than that this thing is amazing and it flies. I will provide an update in a few years to see if it holds up as well as my last one did. Which is also still running I just wanted something with more bays and the newest version of QTS.

Nice product. Only critic now is that it is very loud and the disks seem to always be active.

I bought this with the primary goal of being an iSCSI target for VMWare and it does that perfectly. The desktop interface for management is outstanding. Everything is easy to find and it is very intuitive. Not to mention the desktop graphic design is quite sexy. The hardware is just ugly - but I don't care as long as it holds up over time. I have not need to engage their tech support yet because I've been able to find everything I need either in the interface or on their web site.As a bonus I discovered the Surveillance Station app that comes bundled with it works with all my security cameras. I wasn't even looking for that feature but it works very well and it allows me to do continuous recording of the streams. The native software from the camera mfgr is glitchy at best, this is much better. The network interface management is outstanding as well, with the ability to bind only the services you want on each of the interfaces. For instance, on the port I connected directly to my server for iSCSI I turned off all other services to eliminate any stray useless broadcasts, etc. I'm not often this impressed with a product but this system shows a lot of maturity.

Very happy with the unit - ended up popping in 16gb SODIMM (2x8gb) ram modules for better general capacity / performance ; and set it up with pair of NVME.SSD disks for cache (make sure not to get NVME.M2 parts). The setup is straightforward; raid build for large (6x8Tb drives into raid6 volume) was smooth and painless - and the user interface straightforward but feature rich. Very happy with the unit. Certainly recommended. Lots of down-the-road upgrade options remain including a 10gig nic if we need more bandwidth than the 4x1Gb trunked interface config. Just great..

I upgraded from Synology DS1817+ to this NAS. So far, I love it so much. It is powerful and has a lot capability to upgrade. I upgraded it 2x8gb RAM to raise the total up to 20GB. I then added a SFP+ adapter (Intel X520-DA2) which boosted the speed of Ethernet up to 10G. At RAID 5 configuration, my upload/download speed is around 350MB/s. The speed is bottle-necked at RAID 5 since it uses 3 disks to read/write. The speed will increase when I add more disks to the RAID 5. I also added a graphic card (MSI GTX) to transcode. Because this card requires two slots which forces me to sacrifice my SFP+ slot, I had to extend the graphic card connection with an PCIe expansion cable (10cm). This configuration works perfectly since the graphic card is only for transcoding. Now, I can transcode movies right at the NAS with a blazing speed. Note: The AMD processor has no capability to do transcoding. I also, upgraded it with two 500gb WD SATA m.2 memory sticks in RAID 0 configuration for caching data (RAID 1 wont help much for RAID 5 because SATA M.2 max speed is limited at 560MB/s). The only negative thing is that this QNAP NAS only accepts SATA M.2 sticks which limits at 570MB/s. It does not accept NVMe M.2 sticks which can speed up to 6000MB/s.

Tech support is hit or miss sometimes great sometimes awful. After taking a month to determine they needed to RMA my box. They suggested I buy another box and resetup from scratch while this one is being repaired. No option for me to pay for a spare-by-air or them send me a box I could simply restore a backup of the OS and insert my drives. Even a Drobo could do that over 10 years ago. Will not be using Qnap again.
