picked up the HABOTEST GFCI Outlet Tester with LCD Display to help with some home electrical diagnostics. The device is compact and easy to use—just plug it in, and it provides immediate feedback on wiring status. The color LCD screen is a nice touch, making it straightforward to read voltage levels and identify common wiring issues like open ground or reversed polarity. However, there are a few drawbacks:• Accuracy Concerns: The voltage readings aren’t always precise. In some cases, it displayed incorrect voltage levels, which could be misleading during troubleshooting. • Limited Fault Detection: While it identifies several wiring problems, it doesn’t detect all possible issues. For instance, certain complex wiring faults might go unnoticed. • Build Quality: The tester feels a bit flimsy. While it hasn’t broken, I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t hold up to heavy use over time.

i wish it powered off the 120vac rather than batteries ...but i do understand why.

Great device and useful display info, one potential improvement would be to be able to set gfci thresholds depending on the geographic location, still 5 stars

This one has lower price compare other very similar items, I think they are from the same manufacturer. Works okay as far as I can tell because I don't have a faulty outlet so it cannot detect anything other than "correct".

This is a great little detector--for only a few more dollars than the standard tester at big box stores, you get the ability to test GFCI outlets. I'm a hobbyist handyman and like to use these before/while working on replacing outlets or figuring out what might be connected to specific circuits while I'm diagnosing problems. For the usual basic stuff--seems to work great. If you're testing low baseboard outlets, the specs are a little hard to read while in the wall than the usual orange/red lights that can be seen from the front or the top. That said, because it's battery operated, when you unplug it, you can still see the test results on the screen so that's nice. The ability to test GFCI outlets is great--nice to be able to make sure they actually trip when a problem is detected as opposed to just hoping they work when you need them. That said, most of my outlets 'failed' the tests because they took slightly over 25ms to trip. I'm no electrician but from my limited reading on this, my times are ok here in the US so I'm using this to make sure the outlets trip but not taking the "error" reporting based on time as a true problem without considering the numbers (since I'm not an expert, and this is electricity, I don't want to tell you my numbers and the rational I'm using in case I'm incorrect or it's different in your area). The unit requires batteries--I'm embarrassed that it took me a minute to figure out how to install those! There's no mention of them in the instructions, but there's a small screw on the back you need to remove, then the back slides. I guess they do that so you can't open the unit while it's plugged in, but would have been nice if this was made a bit more obvious or at least mentioned in the instructions. That said, instructions appear to be well written and not a poorly translated doc like I'm seeing more and more.

I'm an electrical engineer (not the same as an electrician who'd be even better for this) and as a homeowner, I often fix or install new electrical equipment. This tester will be useful in testing in outlet installations, particularly the GFI ones, in the future.I had an issue immediately opening the package. It was obvious that batteries needed to be inserted (batteries are included) but it was entirely unclear how to do so. The very brief manual was of no help at all. I took out the only screw I could find on the back bottom of the device and even then, I couldn't pry anything apart. After some time, I managed to figure out you needed to slide the back and front in a vertical fashion to remove the back (and yes, remove the screw first). This non-obvious battery replacement should have been spelled out in the manual.Following the battery issue, I plugged the device into a working outlet and, as expected, it lit up green, showing the proper voltage and connectivity. I moved it to a GFI outlet and tried the test button. For this, you must hold the white button down for a couple of seconds. It did trip my GFI, as it should, but displayed in red as, by my interpretation anyway, the GFI took too long to trip. I tried again and received consistent results. I'll need to try to find a reference for appropriate trip times and see if I need to replace this outlet. The display is easy to read, even with the multiple numbers and symbols displayed. An error is very visibly apparent as the background turns red rather than the "OK" green color. Operation is also very simple. I consider all of these good qualities. The downside though, is the very limited instructions. There is a very short manual included but it's not particularly helpful. As stated earlier, it didn't even say how to insert the batteries. It's not much more helpful on understanding what you should be looking for on the display.Overall, I think this is a good product but would be better with better documentation. I'll need to do some more research, but it's possible it already identified an issue with my GFI even though I was just testing this device to see how it worked.

I found having the lit screen a nice feature for when I was recently working in a darker space. I've tested out a handful of GFCI outlets now and this seems to work just fine. Most of the GFCIs I tested past, but I did had one fail for a slow trip time. So overall this was worth getting.
