About this item

  • The ''jack of all trades'' among bench planes—excellent for flattening, squaring and removing mill marks.

The versatile jack plane is typically the first bench plane to touch rough lumber. Its uses range from flattening and squaring to preliminary smoothing. It is often called a fore plane because it is used ''before'' the finer work of the jointer and smoothing planes. Quality materials, precision machining and solid construction result in a hand plane that's an absolute pleasure to use. The sole is precision ground flat. The blade is made from thick 1/8'' hardened carbon steel for reduced chatter and excellent edge retention. Solid sapele is used for the comfortable tote and knob, adding a touch of elegance. Each plane includes a case, sock, manual and a Certificate of Inspection with measurements specific to your plane for sole flatness and blade hardness.

the blade alignment lever is off-center and cannot be centered. With all of my cuts, i need to keep the lever to one side (right side).

I've been using this plane for a few months. First purchased new and in the box (at the Rockler store), I took home and opened the package, pulled apart the chip breaker and plane iron, and thoroughly inspected for flat and defects. The sole had two dings in the side edge, likely from being dropped. The throat for the plain iron had a nik on the trailing edge, which I was able to smooth with a fine file. The sole was flat and to the tolerance claimed.I also checked the plane iron for flat/concave/convex back, showing a slight convex. Polished the underside of the bevel, sharpened and polished bevel as well. The blade adjustment and yoke are very loose, and I noted two full turns of lash before either retracting or extending the iron.Once these issues were dealt with, the plane is fine. The lash is rather aggravating though. Would be better if the yoke were metal and not plastic.I considered returning the plane to Rockler, but the store is far enough away (40 miles) that I decided to deal with the niks in the sole myself through filing and polishing so they wouldn't leave marks in boards. One star off for this issue.
