This grate is so much better. It is made if rolled steel. The two we had before this were cast metal. They melted within one season. Hoping this one lasts for many years

The manufacturer/seller gave such a wonderful review/description of this product....although none of it is true. The metal used only matches the description in one dimension. It is half that in the other. The metal, once it gets hot starts sagging after only one use. Only two weeks old and I am already looking for a replacement. Stay away from this product.

This is steel and I might have preferred iron, but I needed a grate that fit in my fireplace. Most are 14.5" deep and my glass doors won't close over that. And I needed one that had enough clearance under it for my gas fire starter. Thanks to answers from reviewers I learned this 24" one is only 18" across the back and the drawing showed it is about 11.5" deep. Plus the clearance under it is plenty to accommodate the 3" -high gas starter tube. I didn't rate the sturdiness, because I live in Arizona and it is May. But it seems sturdy enough. The previous owner had a lot of fires and his steel grate was missing most of its metal, so maybe you can't expect more than 15 years of hard use. But I won't live that long anyway. So I'm happy with this one.
