When my Time Capsule (TC) died, I was concerned about finding a similar device to replace the TC. I look at and reviewed several potential replacements and decided to go with the My Cloud Home. Feedback and price both played a part in my final decision. I understood My Cloud Home was reaching end of life, but the warranty and support would still be available for some time to come. I've been using the My Cloud Home for about two months and it works fine. Setup was easy and when I called tech support with a question they were very responsive and knowledgeable.

Use to have a regular USB type NAS and through some network magic setup through a VPN direct to the house to get to things when away. Cost and effort just got easier. Now this just plugs into your network add files over the internet and locally as well as even a great central DVR for multiple streaming boxes so you can get to the a recording from any streaming box -Wait I reviewed too soon. Here is an Update..The Title as I have really truly has a new meaning. NAS ness is correct - Paperweight. the device keeps going off line, it is an expensive boat anchor than a NAS - I contacted customer support, the support level kept asking for the data I supplied, and after I supplied it yet once again. After some time, Customer Support asked if they could replace the drive. Had asked me to follow their process, I did. and they end they said it would be 5-7 business days. Well After numerous emails they have consistently stated they are working on the resolve and to be patient, and each time it was a new number of days. Well after 2 months - that this should have been resolved. I am not sure what the delay is. Possibly the replacement drives have the exact same problem -

When my Time Capsule stopped working I was eager to get a replacement that worked with Time Machine (the function on Mac that does automatic system back-ups). I didn't want to rely on iCloud storage or pay for more of it. It was an easy setup. WD plugged into my router (Xfinity) and it was easy to establish the wifi connection to my laptop. WD advertises that it is a replacement for iCloud. I can get it to store all my photos from various devices, but have not learned yet how to access files on my iPad or iPhone, such as recipes created on Mac. There is a USB port on the back of WD, but I can't use it to attach another storage device that I had used on TC to archive some files. It may only have input function. I miss the TC but am grateful to have the WD. UPDATE - it's not a perfect replacement. I've had a lot of trouble accessing and restoring some of my old files. Still it's something.

I hesitated to replace my now aged out My Cloud drive with this one as some of the reviews complained about the interface and stated the drive didn't appear on their network.I didn't initially install WD Discovery but once I did the drive appeared on my network after a reboot. This was important for me as I use the drive to move files back and forth to my ipad. The app for the ipad installed easily and found the drive easily.I wasn't really stoked about the web interface for the drive but I love that I don't need to use it once the drive appears as a network drive. I can setup folders and move files from other places just like I would any other drive. Overall, I'm glad I took the step and replaced my older cloud drive.

First, I admit I can take some responsibility for the long install ordeal. I HATE updating my operating system. I had an old release of MacOS (which is no older than the device in question) when I first begun the install. This yielded an error message that instructed me to use System Preferences to authorize their software to connect the Cloud. Alas, the instructions were wrong, as no such options existed in the OS system. After a 4 hour text interaction with their support service, during which I was asked (several times) to do the very same install and uninstall procedures including terminal commands to scrub my HD for hidden files their uninstaller doesn't succeed in removing, we accomplished absolutely nothing and I have to conclude that their software is absolutely not functional unless you have the latest release of MacOS installed. So, I uninstalled everything, upgraded my OS in service of their install (and lost functionality of several apps I've been using for years), and finally was able to install and use the drive as intended. But do note, this cloud is not simply "plug and play" after setup on Mac. Every time you use it you have to run their software and log into their system to connect to and allow your computer to detect it as a drive, and THEN you open a file explorer window to use it. If you walk away long enough for your machine to sleep, it will not remember your login. You'll have to start from scratch and rerun the software to reveal the cloud in your file system. So it works, and I start by doing what I bought it for, and move about 80GB of raw photo files to my new Cloud Drive. This process gets about halfway through before it experienced an error and aborted. At this point, I'm pretty disgusted and have no idea how much of this relatively basic transfer is faulty, missing, or simply not written yet. My phone seems able to happily back up it's cameral roll to it, with no error messages, so I continue using it for that, and will delve into the bigger file issues later.Or not. On day 3 or 5, all of my devices refer to this cloud as merely "offline" although every other device on my network is communicating without any trouble. I have done the recommended 60 second unplug to reset it several times, and mobile devices can briefly find it, but before long it simply goes offline without any error message or clue as why. No device or web access can find it, and WD's website support system only seems to offer solutions that obviously don't fix this problem, with the exception of one I haven't tried that requires permanent deletion of all data as the first trouble shooting step. I'm pretty close to my limit here. This thing is worthless. I'm likely to return it soon.
