Bought the unit to replace a 4-year old TomTom whose touch screen had died. The 1435TM had all the features I was used to in my old TomTom, easy to understand directions, full width lane/junction view, user adjustable status bar, etc. However, the build quality felt and looked cheap compared to my older comparable 4.3" TomTom. Also I drive a convertible and while daylight glare is always a problem, my old TomTom was legible on the sunniest days with brightness set to 100%. Under the same conditions I could not see the display on the 1435TM at all, so the unit was useless to me. I exchanged it for a Garmin 54LM which I find is not as user friendly as the TomTom, but at least I can see the display in sunshine with the top down (at 80% brightness).

Full disclosure - I'm a big fan of TomTom and this is an upgrade from an older TomTom Go 300 I used for the last 7 years. That is one reason I really like these devices - they seem to last forever. I hope this one lasts as long......but now about this one. The new Lifetime Maps and Traffic features that GPS companies are offering really attracted me to this model. I absolutely hated buying a new map every year or so, especially when you know that about 98% of the old map still applies and only a small percentage was updated. It would have been great to have incremental updates and/or discounted updates based off old version number - but the companies went the route of "free lifetime" instead. I like this, as it ensures you always have the most current map before long road trips. The only problem is if you live in a part of the country where there is a lot of construction, as new roads are slow to update to these devices sometimes. The fact that users can "suggest" new roads, speed limits, closures, etc is a nice feature and hopefully will alleviate some of the errors of past devices. The lifetime traffic was a bit of a concern for me. I had no clue what I would need to make this happen (a connected cell phone with data plan? a special aftermarket device?), but thankfully this model had everything needed to facilitate traffic updates. The only thing you need is a cigarette lighter in your car and the charger. The charger acts as an antenna for the traffic signal that most populated areas broadcast. When I was out along the less populated areas around my home (including the interstate in some parts), no signal was received for traffic, but when in the big city - I had traffic updates almost every 5-10 minutes. Some of the updates would tell me delays, but inform me that the route I was on was still the fastest - and other times, the traffic update would inform me that there was a faster route and ask me if I wanted to take it (you can tell it to automatically change if you like too). This allowed us to by-pass a major accident scene, which lasted for about 2hrs and had cars backed up for hours. We simply went on three side streets and avoided it all. Thank you TomTom Traffiic. The voice recognition is a bit hit/miss and more annoying than it should be. I did get it to program in an address I was looking for, but it wasn't as smooth as I thought it should be. Granted, this isn't the most current model, so there are likely updates to the technology on newer versions. My version is up-to-date according to the software, but perhaps it will get better with future patches. As for patches - that is the one area I was most disappointed in with this model. First, I have been using TomTom Home for years (Go 300) and when I tried to connect this device, I was told it wasn't recognized. You have to use TomTom's newest upgrade software, which is entirely internet based. No problem - simply had to create an account and link it to my old account. This, unfortunately, de-linked my Go 300, but I was replacing it anyway, so not a major concern. The one area that was a bit concerning - the map update for my 1435TM was too large to fit on my device!!! Really??? I tried removing the old map and even tried installing only the new map without any of the other updates - nothing worked. I had to resort to installing only the US portion of the US, Canada, Mexico map. Not a major issue, since I don't live near Canada or Mexico, but still - a bit annoying that the map I own won't fit on the device I own. I am hoping future map updates fit more appropriately and will update my device with the entire map. Crossing my fingers and if that doesn't work, I'll be writing TomTom to let them know the issue.Overall, the device has earned its place in my car. It helped me avoid traffic, it gave me accurate directions to a new store in my area, and the advanced lane guidance feature is a vast improvement over the old Go 300 I had, which basically hoped you could figure out where to drive on the upcoming mega on/off ramp with 50 different options to chose from (exaggerated, but close to reality). While it isn't likely as good as some of the newer models from TomTom that offer "Live" services and other features along that line - it does what I need it to and is far more accurate than my cell phone mapping software.

Just got this 2 days ago & haven't used it much, so this review is work in progress. The device seems to operate fine. Free lifetime map updates & traffic updates really make it a good deal for less than $150I cannot give it more than 3 stars because the first thing that stands out for me is the complete disappearance of a compass showing your bearings. TT has gone from giving a precise-down-to-the-degree reading of your heading, to a tiny compass to NOTHING. I don't want to switch to 2D mode (which i hate - take *that* away) just to see the direction i'm heading towards.UPDATE--2012-11-07I was hoping to up my ranking to 4 stars, but unfortunately the bluetooth on this device is unreliable. I was able to connect it 1 time & it worked fine, but couldn't connect again. They also have a highly-unusable voice control system that simply doesn't work. Plus there are occasional freezes & moments of unresponsiveness. This was never a problem on my XXL.Basic navigation works fine most of the time. Traffic updates work well in the Dallas area.

Have tried two other TomTom GPS units, including the newer VIA 1405TM (which we sent back since it was still very hard to type in information and got quickly too frustrating to keep messing around with).Having lifetime updates on maps and traffic is super-- and the IQ feature is a lifesaver on complicated roads. It will get you out of a jam easily and quickly, and users can also customize all kinds of stuff, with even more expected down the road. When we upgraded to this unit with the voice commands (1435 series), it was just the best extra $20 spent! The voice commands are SO easy and given how hard it's been to type in addresses accurately (even on the newest units), this makes this the best GPS ever!!Well worth the money and can't wait to be totally hands-free (you do have to touch one button on your main screen to activate this function, but it's easy, accurate to touch, and the voice controls really work fantastically!)Great device-- Great functions-- Great deal!
