I was disappointed to see a visible seam from what appears to be where the two halves of the ball were joined together. The ball also broke in half when I tried dropping it from a height of less than 10 CM

This aerogel sphere is a super unique photography prop. It's the strangest thing I've seen in a while, like a solid ball of air. It's incredibly light. Let's get this out of the way: This product has no practical use. It's a sphere of silica aerogel. However if you are a science nerd or teacher, it's a neat sample to have. It's incredibly light and just neat to hold. These can be fragile (they tend to be brittle due to how hard they are) so I'm not sure I'd suggest trying to bounce it like the listing states. Other than that, very cool. You will need to decide if it's worth the price to you to have this very difficult to create material.

This is a “transparent monolithic sphere”, (25mm) of aerogel, which looks like frozen smoke. The product is advertised as “actually bounce and make a distinctive ringing sound when gently dropped onto a hard surface.” We dropped it on a bed mattress from 12” and it shattered. It probably should not be dropped from any height, because as the manufacturer says it is brittle. We are disappointed it shattered from dropping it onto a soft surface. It’s best kept inside the nice mini jar it arrives in.

Bought this to add to a display of other 1" spherical materials like steel, Tungsten, etc. The makers did a good job of removing any imperfections and only a slight blemish was visible likely from an injection point. I would recommend this for educators or hobbyists or anyone into the science of aerogels.

Do I have any real use for this? No, but it's a great curiosity. I have a tungsten cube that is among the densest objects, and now a sphere of aerogel that is among the least dense and it's just interesting to have. As noted, you can drop this and it bounces (I didn't drop from more than 4-5 inches onto my table) - it sounds and acts like a ball bearing when you do and will bounce for quite some time. It comes in a screw top container, I wish it had a display stand but then again any sort of stout breeze would probably blow this sphere off so I haven't figure out how to display it properly yet.

I've wanted a piece of aerogel for a long time. The material is fascinating and incredibly useful.This chunk of aerogel comes in a small glass jar, and is about the size of a ping pong ball. There's no real practical use for it, but my kids thought it was really cool and I enjoy playing with it.A fun little desk item that invites questions and curious onlookers!
