About this item

  • Pumpkin Seeds: Connecticut Field Pumpkins are a classic heirloom variety, known as one of the oldest pumpkin types in American history, dating back to Native American cultivation.
  • Weight: They typically weigh between 15 to 25 pounds and have a bright orange rind with shallow ribbing, making them a popular choice for carving jack-o'-lanterns.
  • Culinary Use: The flesh is thick and slightly sweet, suitable for cooking, though less flavorful than smaller sugar pumpkins, often used in pies, soups, or roasted dishes.
  • Decorative: They are considered an all-purpose pumpkin, valued for both decorative use during Halloween and Thanksgiving and as a traditional homestead crop.
  • Quality: All Pumpkin seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
  • Quantity: Seed Needs offers generous quantities. You can share with friends and family, or you can save the extra seeds until the following season, if properly stored.
  • Packets: Each seed packet displays an artful illustration of the variety to be grown, as well as detailed seed sowing information on the reverse side. They measure 3.5" wide by 5" tall.
  • Promise: Seed Needs will never knowingly supply GMO based seed products. The vast majority of our seeds are open pollinated & heirloom, with the exception of a few hybrids.
  • Germination: Seed Needs packets contain some of the freshest seed available. Direct from the growers. If sown correctly, you will begin seeing results in only a matter of days.
  • Freshness: All seeds are packaged in tear resistant and moisture resistant packaging. This keeps the seeds a whole lot fresher than the competitions selection!

BULK Package of 200 Seeds For Planting!

Grow a garden filled with Connecticut Field Pumpkins, from freshly harvested Cucurbita pepo seeds. Connecticut Field is an heirloom favorite that’s perfect for carving and pies. The pumpkins are usually 15 to 20 pounds, orange in color and have flat bottoms. The plants will grow to a mature height of roughly 12 to 24 inches tall and a vining length of 10 to 15 feet or more. Each vine will produce 2 to 4 pumpkins which are ready for harvesting in roughly 110 days after first sprouts appear.

Harvesting Your Pumpkins:

When your vines start to establish pumpkins, be sure to place straw under the fruits to prevent them from touching the bare ground beneath, as this can cause rotting. Your Connecticut Field Pumpkins will be ready for harvest in roughly 110 days after first sprouts appear. Cut the stems at least 2 to 3 inches from the actual fruits, otherwise the fruits will rot.

sowing the seed

Sowing The Seed

Pumpkins are best established directly outdoors in the summer. Be sure to select a large enough area for the plants to grow and vine outwards. Remove all unwanted plant life from your sowing area, turning the dirt, or replacing the dirt with a fresh soil. Create mounds of dirt or “hills” roughly 18 to 24 inches wide and at least 8 inches high. Sow 4 seeds per mound at a depth of 1 inch under topsoil. (See below for spacing and other growth habits)

growing conditions

Growing Conditions

Pumpkins enjoy the heat of summer and will thrive in temperatures that are above 75F. The soil should be rich in organic matter, but will also need to be well drained. To improve drainage, it is recommended to add a light compost to any hard, compacted soil in the sowing area. This will prevent the roots from rotting. Water the seeds daily with a mild setting so that the seeds and seedlings are kept moist until germination occurs.

germination and growth

Germination & Growth

Connecticut Field Pumpkin seeds will begin to sprout open in roughly 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants will grow to a mature height of 1 to 2 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet long. These plants will need a large area to grow outwards and can be spaced by hills or mounds of dirt, rather than rows. As explained above mounds should be 18 to 24 inches wide and at least 8 inches tall. Space each mound at least 6 feet apart from one another. When sprouts become visible, direct the vines outwards towards areas that do not contain other plant life.

Had nearly 100% germination when planted outdoors in the ground. Large healthy plants, multiple pumpkins. Only about 1/2 way through growing season but super pleased so far. One seed packet will make a BIG pumpkin patch.

I planted the seeds with my kids in a small area, thinking whatever is healthy enough will grow. Out of all the seeds I planted I think about 95% sprouted. I didn't put them in the best dirt available or added anything. But they shot up in a few days and look very healthy.Update: Neighbors vines grew so fast they choked out the plants and I wasn't able to see any pumpkins grow.

Grew great even in my poor soil not the prettiest pumpkins though if you like ones with thick stems at the top these aren't them.

I bought these seeds to try and grow pumpkins for my daughter to carve up. I don't have a green-thumb by any means, but i followed the directions on the packet for planting, watered daily, and the picture above is 1 month after planting (5 gallon bucket for scale)! I started a bit late in the season so I don’t expect the pumpkins to be fully grown in time for Halloween, but should be good to go for pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving dinner! I planted 6 seeds expecting to maybe get 3 sprouts, but all 6 seeds sprouted! Pictured is just 1 plant.

Like: high germination rate.Dislike: not producing the fruit advertised, and not even consistent plant to plant.

Pumpkin juice or other organic fertilizers will help dramatically. Ease to plant follow directions, pumpkins require water to grow in richer soil you might only need to water every 7 to 10 days in sandy soil where I got them every 5 days watering if it does not rain then you need to water them yourself by hand. Keep treating with organic fertilizers through out the growing cycle until harvesting. Seeds were worth buying! Recommend!
