It looks good in theory. However, the arm that opens the clam is not strong enough to open a medium to large clam. Screw hinge does not hold opening arm stable. Also, handle should be longer to give more leverage. Can’t push hard enough to open.

Not especially sturdy. Quite small with limited leverage of the blade handle. Groove in base, which is meant to stabilize a clam, is too wide for "Little-neck's" and "Middle-necks." When trying to open them, small clams are pressed into the groove, and leverage, which is what this device is all about, is lost. Blade is too thick and not well shaped to force a closed clam to open. To be effective in opening, clam must have already relaxed its hinge muscle. But at that point, any handheld clam knife will do. The hand-rest on the top of the blade, which is intended to a pressure point, interferes with the penetration of the blade into a clam's shell. For the cost of it, this shucker is OK. On that basis, I don't condemn it, but I wouldn't buy it again.

The clam shucker really doesn't work. I used it to open about 200 clams that I raked on Cape Cod and the shucker crushed every shell. The blade has a blunt edge that won't separate the two halves of the shell without crushing them. It was awful. There is also a wedge on top of the blade that broke off after about 20 clams. It was a disaster. I would give it no stars if I could but you have to give at least one star to get your review posted.

Does not work very well right out of the box but after I sharpen the blade it work well

Why is that some people have a knack for gadgets like this?I haven't been able to get one decent clam opened with this. The clams "buckle open" or the blade slips to the side. The shells crack in pieces. Gave it a few tries and it doesn't get any better. I line it up carefully with the ridge under the blade. As soon as I apply pressure to crack open, the blade either skips down the side or cracks the shell. So either the blade is not sharp enough to get a "bite" on the clam and make a clean cut or the blade is too thick to line up in the crevice.Would like to hear from those users who have had a good experience with this tool. I love fresh clams but I'll have to order them at the restaurant until I can figure this thing out!

I bought 2 of these one for me and one for my neighbor. My Dad had this exact model for over 20 years and I would have fixed the old one if I had my tig welder. We used the new one and opened about 100 clams and it worked great. I would recomend this to any novice or pro it works very well.

Thought maybe if I used it "just so" it might work. NOT! Floppy, and a rivet so you can't even tighten it. Flimsy metal, dull blade. It "opened" some clams but shredded the edges, or the shells just cracked. Either way, it created so many shell fragments that the clams were almost much inedible. Grrrr! I grew up near the Jersey shore and took clams for granted... until I moved to Tennessee! Can't order clams on the half-shell here for love or money. Finally realized if I wanted fresh clams, I'd have to shuck 'em myself. And let me tell you, they ain't cheap down here, and I sure didn't want to throw 'em away because of shell fragments! So I switched to the Oxo Good Grips clam knife and the kevlar glove -- which I ordered with the R&M shucker just in case -- and the Oxo worked perfect, and easy! I used to watch my father shuck clams all the time but was always afraid to do it for fear of cutting my hands. Thought I'd try the "hands-free" shucker. Waste of money! Stick with a good old-fashioned clam knife with a sturdy and sharp blade, like the Oxo. And the kevlar glove put me at ease.
