This mulching kit fit my John Deere S100 42”mower that I purchased from HD.I first tried the less expensive $30 plug for mulching, which doesn’t fit the best and lets clippings blow out. It didn’t do a very good job mulching even with $50 after market blades, so I returned them. Save yourself some headaches and buy this kit. It’s well worth the money, when you’re considered it includes mulching blades, and it’s cost considerably less than a bagger with high lift blades. Best of all you don’t need to deal with all the clippings. If you’re fussy, you might want to go over the lawn a 2nd time crosswise to minimize rows/clumps of mulch. It’s a little tricky to install this when you’re trying to put the bolt through the deck. There’s a lot of videos and help available online. I would say it’s best to have a second person to help you line up that bolt up and install the wingnut. A clamp may help line it up too.

After comparing reviews for this kit and the mulch plug, I decided to go with this one. I installed in on my new (used one time before) S240 mower this past weekend. Here's my thoughts so far...1. Remove the mower deck. The instructions say you can install the kit without removing the deck, but don't bother trying. I fought with the bolts while trying to get the blades off for about an hour before I decided to just take off the deck. Once I did that it took me five minutes to get them off. It only takes a couple minutes to remove and reinstall the deck, so it's so worth it. I also imagine it would be a bear to get the plug in place if I hadn't removed the deck for reasons that will be obvious in a moment. Remember though, that once you remove the deck, the instructions will be upside down--make sure you don't install the blades the wrong way.2. Be sure to clean the deck thoroughly. I had only used my mower once before installing this kit, but there was still a significant amount of dried grass stuck to the bottom of the deck. The plastic plug is a tight fit, so the cleaner the deck, the easier it will be to fit it. I (lightly) used a paint scraper to get all the clumps out as best I could.3. Don't forget the little groove below the discharge hole. Despite scraping all the grass off, the screw that attaches the plug to the deck was still about an 1/8th" off from the hole it goes through. The culprit was some debris stuck in the groove on the bottom of the deck around the discharge shoot. Once I scrubbed that clean I was able to get it lined up and attached. In general, it wasn't too difficult to install once I got everything cleaned up really well. The instructions are a little vague and are missing some important details, such as what size socket you need to remove the blades (it's a 15/16"). Once I got the deck back on I discovered that I had threaded the belt wrong, so the blades wouldn't engage. A quick look at my owners manual got that straightened out and I was off to mow. I did set the deck a little too low, so I ended up with a lot of grass clumps, so I raised the deck a little once I moved to the back yard and it looks much better. Either way, I like the results much better than when I was side discharging, so I'd say the mulcher was a good investment.

I too got sick of bagging. I also have a D-130 with a 42 inch deck, in fact, it's the same deck the LA-120, and the LA-135 SE have. I own all three and they span over 10 years. (3 separate properties) That's how long they've been making this very same tractor and deck. It's hard to improve on perfection and that's why I own three of them, all with the V twin. Since the 130 is brand new and not having any grass to scrape under her, I decided to try to install this with the deck on, pointed up a hill so I could get underneath.BINGO! Total installation didn't take 1/2 hr. You position the blades so they're cross ways and this slips right in around the front of them. It has one carriage bolt already locked into the unit, and the threaded end of it sticks through the top of the deck out a pre-drilled hole in the far side. The one bolt is all it needs to hold it in and it uses a large wing nut to hold it in place. It took longer to get the old blades out. (use a piece of 2x4 to jam them) The wing nut also makes it very easy to remove if you need side discharge for a cut. Very well thought out.Frankly, I don't even know what the directions are for; I never looked at them. It's pretty obvious where everything goes; it's a lawnmower deck. With 4-6 inch grass, (I cut it at 2 1/2) you couldn't tell there were any clippings at all. My neighbors grass was 8- 10 inches however, and you could see clippings. It did chop it up a lot finer doing it a second time on testing.I took the old chute and steel guard off and it's amazing being able to cut close on both sides. This thing is great! If you have a Deere with the 42 inch deck and you mulch? This is a MUST HAVE!FOUR YEARS LATER: So how is it doing? Still going strong and it's the only mower I use. I've never had to take the unit out for a side discharge cut. It doesn't matter how long the grass is, this can handle it and mulch it. I had the blades sharpened two seasons ago when I had the whole fleet sent it for full services. Four of these John Deere tractor mowers and four Ariens Platinum Snowblowers. It's nice to buy the best, they last forever and there are never any surprises. My eldest couple are over 20 years old and they look, and run like new. None of them burn any oil and start right up. The batteries are garbage though. But so are all the rest of them in this size. Advanced Auto does make their own and that's where I buy them.I can't believe my new mower is 4 years old. Huh, time flies when you're getting old. LOL
