Wrapping your baby's crib mattress is a simple intervention to give you peace of mind. What makes a mattress toxic? PVC is a known human carcinogen linked to cancer, birth defects, learning and developmental delays, endometriosis and immune abnormalities. Flame Retardants can cause cancer, reduced IQ, developmental delays and reproductive difficulties. Polyurethane Foam affects the nervous and immune system, causes neurological disorders, autoimmune weakness, asthma, allergies, infertility, miscarriage and child behavior disorders. Our product was developed in response to research in New Zealand stating that poisonous gases are being generated in the mattress where the baby sleeps. The toxic gas theory, presented by Dr. James Sprott, states that the chemicals: phosphorus, arsenic and antimony are very frequently present in bedding. When these chemicals mix with naturally occurring molds found in the baby's mattress, the gases shut down the central nervous system, resulting in the cessation of breathing and heart functions. Our specially-formulated crib mattress covers are impermeable to these toxic gases as well as: BPA, Latex, Phthalate and Lead free. Too big for the Graco Lite pack n play I have but could probably work it out with some good tape.

This says standard size for crib but when it arrives you will find that it is actually sized for a bassinet or something much smaller than the standard crib mattress that most people use.

The Mattress Wrapping Campaign was founded in New Zealand by Dr TJ Sprott OBE MSc PhD FNZIC Consulting Chemist and Forensic Scientist. It is a non-profit organization. Dr Sprotts Mattress Wrapping to prevent SIDS protocol, if followed properly, has had a 100% success rate. There has been over 200,000 babies who have slept on a wrapped mattress and not one of them has succumbed to SIDS! Dr Sprott stated that “I believe SIDS is caused by gaseous poisoning and the poison comes from the mattress where the baby sleeps. The gas is formed by the action of an otherwise harmless fungus on certain chemicals within the mattress.” The chemicals that Dr Sprott refers to in his statement are, Phosphine, Arsine and Stibine, all extremely toxic “nerve gases”, which are a combination of fire retardants used in the majority of mattresses and bedding. Interestingly enough, in the last few years there has been a lot information surfacing about how the toxic chemicals in fire retardants in mattresses are causing us harm. So by wrapping the mattresses, you encase the toxins and babies are protected from breathing them in! I had researched and learned all about the New Zealand Mattress Wrap Campaign when I was pregnant with my first but the wraps were only sold in New Zealand! So I bought a non-toxic organic mattress, which was expensive. But later, after heavy use and accidents, I was sure the mattress was now toxic. Used mattresses contain fungus and mold. Especially after years of storage. I was so happy when I found Harlow's mattress wraps on Amazon. I have used these for 2 babies in a row. I used on their pack and play mattresses as well as on their crib mattresses. They all slept on their faces too. Also, just for added protection, I used organic cotton crib sheets & organic cotton pack n play sheets. Regular crib sheets use flame retardants too! So it defeats the purpose in wrapping the mattresses if you use toxic sheets. Also, try not to keep babies too warm. Dr Sprott was believed that SIDS was completely avoidable if all parents followed his mattress wrapping technique and used the correct bedding and clothing to dress their babies in for sleep.Dr Sprott said that babies must be able to regulate their body temperature and not overheat, so sleeping bags and grow suits that completely encase a baby’s toes and hands are not allowed. Nor should a baby ever sleep with his head covered by a bonnet or hat. A baby should never be overdressed for sleep. I wish America would start a Mattress Wrap Campaign here!
