How does a combination washer dryer work?

Washing

Just like a front loading washer, with a combo all your clothes are placed in the front of the unit and you can choose from a wide variety of wash cycles with the control panel. Combos have just as many wash cycles as a standard washer so that you can customize the wash for each load.

Drying

The dry cycle in combo units uses what is called cold water condensation drying. Since combo units wash and dry the clothes in one drum, once the wash cycle is complete the unit heats the air inside the drum and when all the air has been heated and saturated it is sent through a condensing chamber. This chamber is kept cool by cold mist that gets released throughout the dry cycle. When the hot, wet air from the drum enters the condensing chamber the cold water cools the air causing the moisture to release. The cooled air in the chamber is then sent over the heating element and back into the drum where it is heated to soak up the moisture and the process is repeated until the clothes are dry. All the water from the condensing chamber is pumped out of the unit through the same hose that is used to drain water during the wash cycle.

Common Uses

Apartments/Condos without washer or dryer connections

With a 115V plug and faucet you can be up and running washing clothes without laundry connections.

RVs and Boats

Able to fit in tight spaces, a combo is a nice added convenience. Avoid the hassle of laundromats by bringing a combo on the road with you.

Hair Salons

Avoid having to take piles of dirty towels and other laundry offsite to wash by having a combo unit right in the salon.

Absolutely LOVE this machine! I had it professionally installed under my kitchen countertop and it fits perfectly, looks great and does an amazing job. I looked into probably all options out there for a washer/dryer combo and this was the only one that fit under the kitchen countertop where a 24" dishwasher would go. I was nervous because of all the comments about wrinkling and not fully drying but I have never had those issues. If the directions are followed, the machine is filled correctly (slightly more than half way) and clothes are removed promptly, wrinkling and drying are non issues. Not once have I had wrinkles in any of my clothes and my clothes come out completely dry, not even damp. The only things that come out damp are if my sons itty bitty socks get stuck between the door and the tub during the dry cycle but that isn't a big deal, I just hang it to dry over night and put away in the morning. The best feature is the timer, since this does take about 4 hours (give or take) to do a full wash/dry, I set the timer before I leave for work at 8:00am for the wash to start at 3:00pm. This way, when I get home from work it is just finishing up and I can fold and put away without wrinkles. It holds a decent amount of laundry, I can wash a twin set of sheets, fitted, flat and pillow cases. Or about 3 days worth of clothes for me and my 4 year old (given, I have been using this in the summer and I am an xs so the clothes are smaller and lighter). I can also wash about 5 days worth of work clothes on hand wash (no dry) and the load is done in just about an hour. The only downside I see is the smell. I don't know if it is because it is relatively new or because of the electric drying technique, but during drying and when the clothes come out there is almost like a metallic/electrical type of smell. When we walk into the house and the machine is on, my son says "ew mommy, whats that smell, it stinks." However, the smell seems to be dissipating now that it has been used for over a month, 3-4 times a week, and sometimes multiple times a day.I will finish up with this, cleaning the "lint trap" is weird. There isn't really a lint trap but a "coin catch." When opening this to remove objects or balled up lint, you need to put a pan with edges under the catcher. This does not drip a little water, it runs like a faucet on low for about 30 seconds. And lastly, it does vibrate a lot, even with anti-vibration pads. My whole downstairs shakes when on the spin cycle. In sum, I highly recommend this product if you are restricted in any capacity from installing a full size gas washer/dryer.

I had a love hate relationship with this thing at first. After 5 loads, the door lock mechanism stopped working. Edgestar customer service was great. When I emailed them and asked for a replacement part they wanted to replace the meachine; however, due to the difficulty I had getting this one into my second story place, I asked them to try the part first. It was very easy to replace, took less than 5 minutes. Now that we were up and running again, I ran into two issues 1- extremely long dry time, over three hours 2 - regular wash cyles left clothes will wet, even after two additional spin cycles. After reading up on HE washers, I figured out it was HE washer ignorance/ operator error. I have never owned a high efficiency washer before. I basically was using too much detergent, which caused suds to hamper the pump functionality. This caused the clothes to be somewhat wet when entering the dry cycle, which caused it to take hours to dry. I put a shallow pan under the front, removed the coin catch plug, and poured water through the drain hose to flush out the pump and then I ran about 4 loads through rinse/ spin cycle. I now use just two to three tsp detergent per wash and the dry time is reduced to 1-2 hours depending on the material of the clothing. As Douglas M mentioned, the dry timer will hit 15 minutes then stay there. According to customer service, there is a moisture sensor that stalls the timer till it is at the appropriate level, then it finishes the countdown. I don't like this feature. I have found that if I pause it earlier, once the door unlocks, the clothes are sometimes almost dry. There are three preset drying times that can not be changed. I wished there was a timed dry option that did not utilize the sensor. If I pause it before the timer starts the final count down, it takes about 20 min to cool to where the safety will allow the door to unlock. There is no override for this, which has caused me to be late for work when trying to get a load done in the morning. (Gotta take everything out to avoid permanent press wrinkles)So, what I learned:1- use very little detergent2- washer/ dryer works best when 1/3 full if going to use dryer3- don't leave clothes in machine after it stops unless you like serious wrinkles4- although clothes feel damp when removed after dryer stops, they will be dry once they cool downBasically, this little machine is perfect for my needs. I have a small home that will not accommodate a regular size washer/ dryer. I do one load three or four days a week rather than one laundry day a week and it is working great. The one star off was for lack of the dryer timer options.James from Edgestar customer service was very patient with me on all my questions throughout my learning process and was always prompt with his responses.
