As part of a broader exterior painting project, we finally pulled the trigger on upgrading our gutter and downspout system. The original setup had been cobbled together over the years, never particularly well-planned, and left too much water pooling around the foundation—exactly what I’ve been trying to avoid. With Southern California’s winter rains, infrequent though they may be, we knew we needed to do a better job capturing runoff and directing it somewhere useful. That “somewhere” is a series of rain barrels we’ve slowly been adding around the yard. But before we could even think about connecting the downspouts to the barrels, we needed to make sure they were properly fastened to the house. That’s where these Mzcvriru 2x3 downspout straps came in.I’ll admit that I didn’t expect a lot out of downspout straps—they’re basic by design and meant to blend into the background. But these did their job well. I appreciated that the metal took primer and paint evenly, allowing us to coat them the same color as the fascia trim and gutters without any fuss. It’s a small thing, but when you’re putting this much effort into the curb appeal of your house, those little uniform touches really matter. You’d be surprised how much more cohesive everything looks when even the support hardware is color-matched.In terms of installation, there were no surprises. These strapped in as they should and bent easily around the downspouts to keep them snug to the wall. I wouldn’t call the material heavy-duty, but it feels solid enough for something that essentially just needs to stay in place and support vertical pipework. It’s not a component that’s going to see a lot of wear or take much impact, so it doesn’t need to be overbuilt. And for that role, these do just fine.Where the product loses a bit of its luster is in the included hardware. I always appreciate it when companies send fasteners along, but the plastic anchors that came with these straps were, frankly, not up to the task. Anyone who’s ever tried to use a soft anchor in stucco or masonry knows it’s a quick route to disappointment. And if you’re mounting into wood trim, which many of us are, you don’t need an anchor at all. So while it was technically a complete kit, I didn’t bother with their screws or plugs—instead, I used fasteners appropriate for the surfaces I was dealing with. But I consider that a minor inconvenience, not a deal-breaker.All in all, the straps were the star of the show, and they performed exactly as I needed them to. Clean, easy to work with, paintable, and strong enough to support my new downspout runs without complaint. I’d buy them again if I needed more, just with my own box of hardware in hand. Four stars.
