The Satsuki Azalea is a popular choice among Bonsai. This particular plant is very hardy and produces magnificent flowers ranging up to seven inches in diameter. Of all shrubs with flowers, the Azalea is by far the most dramatic with brilliant blooms of radiant colors blooming in late spring. While there are many species of Azalea, the Satsuki, or Rhododendron indicum is easily one of the most popular, featuring an excellent low, twiggy habit with lovely funnel shaped unscented flowers in whites, pinks, reds and purples. The Satsuki is identified by two blossoms on the end of the terminal; they also have slightly hairy leaves budding out freely from even fairly old wood. Because the azalea is highly coveted in Japan, there have been hundreds of different varieties, in every color except yellow, bright orange, and true blue.

Each live plant is shipped with the Phytosanitary Certificate as required by the USDA.

I truly do not understand how this little tree has below 5 stars let alone 4. Here's what I think the issue may be, because I assure you, the company isn't selling you bad plants. If people didn't have luck its likely either their climate, or they didn't read the directions the seller includes. This is an OUTDOOR bonsai! The directions that come with it specifically say that this tree "must experience seasonal and natural temperature fluctuations" and is not recommended to stay inside for more than 5 consecutive days. So if you are wanting a bonsai for your kitchen table, this isn't one.As far as the tree itself, it comes in a styrafoam packaged box labeled with "live plant" so it can be handled accordingly during the shipment process. It comes in a beautiful little bonsai pot. I immediately read the directions and was unsure when reading it needs to be outdoors since I live in Colorado and it arrived in January. I kept it in my garage during the winter months, fortunately we have a window into our garage so I was able to just leave it out there rather than move it during the day for sun. The directions say to make sure in the winter the roots are protected from frost so I had gorilla hair ground cover I put on top of the soil and around the trunk, and then covered that with a layer of moss (decorative moss for succulents). I also wrapped a small scarf around the pot itself. Sounds a bit much, but if its only during the winter months, I think I can handle covering a 4 inch space with some cover and laying a scarf down once a year. I did this until the temperature returned to above freezing and then moved it outside. It started getting flower blooms in March that bloomed into beautiful, vibrant pink flowers all over. I take it inside when the storms are really bad because I don't want it getting over watered. Other than that, it looks great on our patio table, I never thought how cute a bonsai would look as a center piece! Water it every day, just until water starts to come out the bottom and buy slow release fertilizer pellets for nutrients!Overall, the way the tree arrived, the thoroughness of the directions, and the way its been doing, I can only account the negative reviews to people who either don't know how to care for Bonsais or are either over or under watering it in respects to different climates. If Colorado weather permits the survival of this tree, it can live anywhere but hotter climates would likely require an extra watering . I highly, highly recommend this tree, the flowers that bloom make it worth it!

This has received some poor reviews. Here is mine!1) It’s a plant that flowers in summer and that’s how they work. If you order one expecting it to be flowering upon arrival I feel bad for you... Azalea’s blooming out of season would be witchcraft.2) While some say received a plastic pot mine came in a ceramic pot as described. I would have been mad if it came in a plastic pot!3) My plant arrived alive and in good condition. Time will tell how it holds ups but I will follow the directions for its care and report back if it dies after caring for it as directed (see #5)4) It’s an outdoor azalea in a small pot. If it is repotted it will grow larger. If not it will remain small. If you keep it inside without creating the proper conditions it will most certainly die.5) Bonsai AZALEAS should be fed with a special azalea or rhododendron fertilizer. - “Azaleas need a slightly acid soil and hard tap water is not appropriate for them. You can use rainwater, mix rainwater with tap water or filter your tap water for the azalea Bonsai. Feeding: During the growing season azalea Bonsai should be fed with a special azalea or rhododendron fertilizer.”7) Any live plant that is shipped can have a hard time. I feel bad for the people whose plant got recked during shipping - this one’s for you.8) Godspeed Amazon people! Please use common sense. I feel like this is bizarro world and people need to “peddle the bike” AKA think.I promise to come back and shame myself if I follow directions for the care of this OUTDOOR Bonsai AZELEA and it dies (or fails to bloom in the summer).

I bought this plant in December and was really worried that it would be unhealthy or dead on arrival. It actually looks quite good. Azaleas are evergreen so it came with a bunch of leaves and looks really nice. The pot mine came with is cream colored and looks good. It appears that this plant was very well cared for before it got to me as evident by all the small little leaves all over it. There are also flower buds just ready for spring and I can't wait to see it in bloom. To comment on the pictured azalea, I would say that the actual product varies in a few ways. First is the pot, mine is cream colored slightly more angular corners and is frayed outward at the rim. I like it better than the pictured pot. It appears to have almost an antiqued effect where the cream is distressed a bit at the edges. The pot is just more my style than the pictured one. Secondly, the trunk of the azalea that I got was not too much like the pictured one. It appears that there are several trunks in there but there is a main trunk and the other ones could be easily pruned away. It could be that there is a common trunk that is buried under there somewhere but I'll have to wait for spring to uncover it. I think other than that it is a pretty accurate representation of what to expect when you buy this thing. The crown of the tree is almost spot on. Just a little dome of leaves and buds that will probably have flowers that look exactly the same as the picture. All things aside, this is a great plant and I really like it. I tired making an amateur bonsai from some azaleas that I found at a department store and this is a way more effective way to go about bonsai. The other ones have huge leaves in comparison and look way out of place. Go Satsuki and have a blast.
