My house is 36 years old and sash cords are starting to break on one window after another. The house has 22 windows and each window takes 2 balancers. That's a lot of money just for parts. I decided to buy 2 balancers to fix the window with both cords broken and go from there.2 new balancers came in complete with screws, protective vinyl tabs and instructions. They are stamped "Made in China". Will they survive 36 years like the original Andersens did? Time will tell.I followed the instructions step by step and did not have any major trouble. One complication was with the previous house owners, who sealed and painted the seams between vinyl liners and window frame. Lower left jamb liner and head jamb liner need to be removed for balancer replacement, so I had to cut the seams open with the knife. Even after that it was difficult to remove the liners. The instructions are very good and cover all you need to do. The balancers are good for now, but they should not cost more than $5 each for what they are. In the coming weeks I will do a post-mortem exam of the original balancers and possibly develop a way to repair them. Stay tuned...09-21-22 update. I have opened both original balancers by cutting a little on stakes with a Dremel tool and prying both halves open with a screwdriver. As you can see on the pictures there are 2 plastic spools: one for lower sash and the other - for the upper one. Only the cord for the lower sash was broken, the one for the upper sash was intact. This is no surprise since the lower sash was constantly opened and closed, but the upper one always stayed in place. Even the upper sash cord was quite difficult to pull. I think the torsion springs were lubricated at the factory, but over the years oil or grease has dried out and started acting more like a glue. I put some oil on both springs and operation became smoother. I will try to replace the broken cord and will report later.09-28-22 update. The cord was replaced with a similar nylon line and balancer is operating well enough. I took the other two windows balancers out to look what's wrong with them. One balancer has broken plastic spool and the other one has broken spring. I cannot repair that and balancers would have to be replaced. Many other balancers in my house are not broken yet, but difficult to operate. I will have to deal with it next spring. One final observation:I think the balancer is a maintenance item and should be serviced every few years. Over the time lubrication becomes ineffective and balancer becomes difficult to operate. You have to apply a lot of force to close your window and this eventually breaks the cord. So my advice - if window becomes difficult to operate, take the balancers out and service them. It is much cheaper than buying new balancers.

Matched my old sash perfectly and the Andersen instructional video was very helpful.

I usually order direct from Andersen. These parts are exactly the same, less expensive, and actually received by 10:30 the next morning. Installed with no problems.

Fit fine in my older Anderson double hung window. Appears that they consolidated these sash lifts to reduce their SKU inventory so this one may not be exactly the same as the one that failed, so it is best to install replacements in pairs.

Had to replace a broken window balance. First went on YouTube to watch a video from This Old House, then looked up the window online to find the part number. Took less than an hour to replace both sides!! Window works great again!!
