About this item

  • Stereo microscope for home or classroom use enables students and hobbyists to inspect biological specimens, rocks, stamps, jewelry, and large specimens that require handing or manipulation
  • Forward-mounted binocular viewing head with interchangeable pairs of 5x and 10x widefield eyepieces, adjustable interpupillary distance, and 45-degree inclination to simplify viewing for young users
  • Interchangeable 2x and 4x objectives provide low magnification and longer focal length for inspecting large-scale specimens
  • Upper and lower illumination has 10W halogen light source to illuminate specimens
  • Frosted stage plate allows light to pass through from below with transparent specimens, reversible black and white stage plate provides contrast with light- and dark-colored specimens, and stage clips secure the specimen during viewing

The AmScope SE306R-PX stereo microscope has interchangeable pairs of 5x18mm and 10x18mm widefield eyepieces, 2x and 4x objectives, upper and lower halogen lighting, two stage plates, and a pillar stand. The forward-mounted binocular viewing head has an interpupillary range of 55 to 75mm and a 45-degree inclination to ease viewing for young users. The WF5x18mm and WF10x18mm eyepieces combine with the 2x and 4x objectives to provide 10x, 20x, and 40x magnification, and a longer working distance for inspecting large-scale specimens that require handling or repair. The optical glass lenses provide sharp images, and are fully coated to ensure high-resolution images. Dioptric adjustment accommodates individual eye-strength differences, and eye guards ensure comfortable viewing. A stereo microscope, sometimes called an inspection or dissection microscope, has low magnification and a long working distance that enables users to manipulate the object being inspected.

The microscope has upper (episcopic) illumination that reflects light off the specimen for enhanced visibility of opaque specimens, and lower (diascopic) illumination that transmits light up through the specimen for enhanced visibility of translucent and transparent objects. The 10W halogen light source provides bright light in a concentrated path. The pillar-style stand secures the head for precise focusing, and bilateral coarse focus eases use for left- and right-handed users. The stage has a frosted stage plate for use with lower (transmitted) lighting, and a reversible black and white stage plate that provides contrast with light- and dark-colored specimens when used with upper (reflected) lighting. Stage clips that secure the specimen during viewing. The microscope has a 2-1/8" (53mm) working distance. All metal construction is durable and stain-resistant.

Microscopes are instruments used to enhance the resolution of an object or image. Types include compound, stereo, or digital. Compound microscopes use a compound optical system with an objective lens and an eyepiece. Stereo microscopes show object depth in a three-dimensional image. Digital microscopes are used to display an image on a monitor, rather than looking through a lens. Microscopes can have monocular (one), binocular (two), or trinocular (three) eyepieces, with varying magnification abilities. Magnification ability refers to the size of an image. Resolution, also known as resolvant power, refers to the clarity of the image. The interaction between field of view (FOV), numerical aperture (NA), and working distance (WD) determines resolution. Microscopes can control magnification through a fixed focus, or through a range of adjustments. They can also utilize LED, fluorescent, and mirror light sources to help control viewing capabilities. Microscopes are widely used in education, lab research, biology, metallurgy, engineering, chemistry, manufacturing, and in the medical, forensic science, and veterinary industries.

United Scope manufactures microscopy equipment and accessories under the brand name AmScope. The company, founded in 1996, is headquartered in Irvine, CA.

I purchased this after much research for use with my stamp collection. I was a bit hesitant at the low price, $144 when valued at $650, thinking it was a come-on and would turn out to be cheaply made, but I am not disappointed--indeed am delighted at obtaining such a bargain! I can see this easily as a $650 item. The microscope has a heavy industrial feel to it. The frame is all or mostly metal and very sturdy with nice heft. The focus mechanism (knobs on the sides) are smooth and precise in their operation. The knob in the back allows for gross adjustments should you have large object on the stage. There are two lights, one above to illuminate the top item on the dual sided black/white stage base plate and one beneath the stage for use with the included translucent base plate. The power cord is heavy duty and grounded, adding to the "this-is-not-a-toy" feel of the instrument. The instrument arrived carefully packed in molded styrofoam, but be careful opening it as the extra lenses and other parts, two extra bulbs, a small wrench, and two sets of rubber eye pieces, can fall out. AmScope also includes a medium duty dust bag which is an excellent addition to the set. The eyepieces are each held in place by a tiny Phillips tip screw and you will need a jeweler's screwdriver to loosen the screws and changes lenses.I was a bit concerned that the magnification levels (10x, 20x, and 40x) would be too much for use with my stamps, but they are perfect. I am amazed at the detail visible under 20x and am having a much easier time distinguishing between the various types of a large number of 1894 Washington 2 cent stamps. I don't expect I will have to change to the 5x lenses much since with the 10x lenses in, I can go from 20x to 40x simply by turning the objective lens from 2x to 4x. By the way, that also has a sturdy, professional feel to it, rotating smoothly and snapping into place. The stereo eyepieces make viewing things SO MUCH BETTER!One thing I wish would have been included is a small box to store extra lenses and the additional tools. Of course, AmScope offers nice aluminum cases with plenty of storage for additional items as optional accessories. Finally, I purchased the reverse model, which most people would say is the 'normal' model with the stage in the front. I was concerned that I might have a difficult time manipulating the stamps on the stage if they were between me and the microscope, but am glad I ordered this model. The other version has the stage to the rear which would seem to make the stage more accessible, but it also means you have to reach around the microscope to adjust things and the power cord will come out of the instrument toward you rather than being in the back of the instrument.
