This IC has been around forever and has many applications in timing. Less known is that they also are a low cost voltage level shifter and FET gate driver. Pins 1 & 2 are connected to common negative and pins 8 & 6 are connected to +12V power. Low voltage input signal then goes into the RESET pin 4. The trigger point is approximately 0.7V making it suitable for even 3.3V micros. Input state matches output on pin 3 and the FET gate is driven thru a low ohm resistor. I will be using these in a simple but efficient power point photovoltaic water heater. Voltage is set by a simple voltage divider with a base resistor of 3.3K ohm. This value should stay low as this resistor acts as a pulldown for the reset pin. A 0.22uF capacitor provides noise filtering and a time delay to make the circuit stable. Scope trace shows trigger points and time delay. Trigger point will vary slightly with temperature but is fine for most applicationsFor learning electronics this is one of the must have chips to experiment with because it can be used in so many ways. Be aware that it requires good bypassing capacitors on the power pins as triggering is supply voltage dependent. Any noise in the power from motor spikes can cause false triggering. These chips work as intended.
