I had never seen these unique stud-finders until I saw them on an HGTV show. Again, hard to find at locl brick and mortar stores as they would rather stock the $20-$50 units. Ordered then on Amazon and they work as slick at butter! It's things like this that make mu Prime membership pay off!

My goto when my stud finder proves to be useless, has been some repurposed hard drive magnets on some fishing wire. Not very elegant. While maybe not as strong as hard drive magnets, these are definitely more elegant. They work fairly well though while strong, I wish the magnets were a little more powerful. The included string adds just a bit too much weight and the magnet will miss a deeper buried nail. They do make a lot of noise dragging along the wall. Maybe not ideal for apartment / condo dwellers working late at night. Oops. Otherwise, these make a pretty polished low-tech stud finder.

This set of magnetic stud finders easily locate screws embedded in sheetrock, and even below tiles. The description rates them at 27 pounds, and they are strong. If placed any closer in the included pic they would start to attract. The simplest way to estimate the location of a stud is by finding two screws along the same stud and working within that line. While I don't find much use for the included lanyards, they could be repurposed. Overall, these are a cost-effective alternative to the multi-LED electronic stud finders I typically use.
